A Look Into The Life Of A Puppy

Second Pregnancy

Puppies Moving

New born puppies sleep most of the time only waking to eat. While sleeping the jerk, kick and sometimes whimper. These are normal reflex's that help aid in the development of muscle tone.

A good mother instinctively keeps her nest and puppies clean. She will lick the belly and rectum of each puppy which stimulates the elimination reflex.

Puppies Growth

  • 1 day old: Learns to nurse & bond with the mother
  • 5 days old: Puppies can raise their heads at birth but cannot support their body weight
  • 10-14 days: Their eyes and ears will open
  • 2 Weeks: Actively crawling & may be able to stand
  • 3 Weeks: Puppies can walk, stand a bit & eat from a bowl (Lexia started around 20 days old/Lestat started at 23 days old to eat on his own {He crawled over to the food when he smelt it})
  • 25 Days: Puppies are fully oriented to sight & sound
  • 4 Weeks: Puppies can start to be trained on a pee pad's while in the whelping box by creating an are for them to use
  • 5 Weeks: Puppies should be picked up & socialized with people
  • 5-7 Weeks: Start to form relationships with people
  • 8-10 Weeks: Fully weaned from mother & eating puppy food
  • 10-12 Weeks: Puppies begin to explore their environment

Newborn Environment:

Puppies should be kept very warm for the first few weeks. A heat lamp can assure extra warmth in the whelping box along with a heating pad.

The whelping area should be kept at a steady temperature of 85F or 29C & be free from drafts or the cold. The number one cause of puppy fatality is inadequate quarters.

Cleaning/Drying of the newborn pup:

Lestat & Lexia Two Weeks Old:

Mothers Bond:

The mother-puppy bond begins shortly after delivery. The mother recognizes each puppy by their distinctive scent. During the process of licking, nursing and cleaning the puppy, she establishes a bond until the puppy is weaned.

The bond does not happen right after a c-section & may take up to 24 hours. Sometimes these moms have a hard time accepting their newborns. You can request to put the puppies on her nipples to feed before the sedation wears off.

A new mom may have difficulty nursing a large litter. With a little assistance she can be shown how to nurse her puppies and keep from stepping on them.

Some house pets that are close to their family members may have a hard time with motherhood if it means losing their family members. Spend lots of time with the mom and her new litter so that she does not abandon her puppies.

The problem I had with my Pebbles and still have is that she will only eat when I am watching her and it has to be in her whelping box. Whatever it takes I will be there for her. Pebbles is with her baby 23hrs out of the day only leaving to potty and visit with us for a few minutes a day. Make sure to spend time with her and her new litter praising her job as being a new mother.

Lestat Three Weeks Old

At three weeks old baby Lestat tries to walk and can for 30 seconds or so then gets tired. He is very quiet and soft spirited. He isn't trying to eat on his own yet. His sister Lexia is quite the opposite and much larger than him. He weights 13.5oz as of January 5 and she is 15oz. @ 3 weeks old. Lexia is beginning to eat from a bowl on her own.

Dew Claws Removed: 2nd or 3rd Day when blood clotting has begun.

I remove my puppies dew claws by the clamping method and tail is also removed the same way. First I gather all the necessary supplies needed: Blood Stop, Surgical Tape & Gauze, Sterile Glover, Clamps & Tweezers. Then with the help of someone else holding the puppy I clamp down on the base of the dew claws. This is done 4x on each paw. The same method is used on the tail. Where the brown starts under the tail is where I clamp leaving about 3/4" of the tail still attached. Then I twist off the tail. There is no blood afterwards. However momma likes to lick the wounds for the babies afterwards. Sometime's the wound begins to bleed. This is why I use gauze and tape combined with the blood stop. I tape the area up for a full day and take it off in the night. Everything heals fine & all is well. Please note that mom of the litter should be placed where she cannot hear the babies cry.

Puppies Beginning To Eat:

At three weeks old puppies begin to eat from a bowl. The food must be soft and mashed up. I blend up my puppy food (Buffalo Blue) and mix with gravy, baby chicken food or chicken broth. First day eating; January 4, 2010 Exactly 3 weeks old..

Puppy Cuteness:

Puppy Cuteness:

At 29 days old we see the puppies are walking on their own & learning how to play with their litter mates. They weight 1.1lbs for the boy Lestat and 1.3lbs for the girl Lexia.

Puppies can eat on their own now, wet puppy food mixed with Blue Buffalo blended hard puppy food. I grind the puppy food up in a blender then mix it with the wet food. I add some chicken broth or water then mix it into a paste. The puppies eat till they are full. They still nurse with momma as well.

Lexia & Lestat are both pee-pad trained already. They pee on the pee pad when they wake up. Very smart little puppies at only 1 month old!

Puppy Growth Chart :

Example: 3 months old puppy = 12 weeks (Convert to weeks)
1 pound = 16 oz (Convert pounds to ounces)
12 weeks @ 1.4 lbs = 20 onces (Puppies Weight)
Conversion 16oz. X 1Lbs + 4oz = 20 ounces
Find the puppies current age to the left of the column (12 weeks)then follow weight. Once weight is found follow to the bottom of the chart and there will be an estimated weight gain.

Example puppy weights 20 onces @ 12 weeks. Therefore adult weight should be 2.5 lbs.

My puppies are the smaller of the breed so 1.4lbs @ 3 months = 2.5lbs Today at 8 months old Lexie weighs 2.14lbs. So the chart does work with a few minor differences.
