First Trimester

In the first trimester we see the beginning of a new life. Here the embryo is three weeks old.

Mothers Development

    First signs of pregnancy begin.

  • missed period or a shortened period

  • an increase need to urinate more frequently

  • breast tenderness, swollen and painful to touch

  • change in vaginal discharge

  • bulge can be felt during pelvic exam where the fetus is
    attached

  • the uterus feels softer

  • the cervix changes from a pink color to a bluish
    hue because of the increased venous blood circulation

  • morning sickness can occur anytime of the day

  • change in appetite

Fetal Development

    The embryo begins to grow.

    Four Weeks
  • embryo is just visible
  • Chorionic Villi is developed from which the placenta forms
  • production of HCG hormone to stop menstral cycle
    Five Weeks
  • beginning of embryo nervous system
  • development of the brain and spinal cord
  • heart beats faintly
    Six Weeks
  • embryo grows one third of an inch
  • the brain, spine, ears and eyes have began to develop
  • the organs begin to appear (lungs, kidneys, heart, etc.)
    Seven Weeks
  • major organs develop
  • the arms and legs emerge from the body with toes and fingers
  • the muscles, bones and blood vessels begin to develop
    Eight Weeks
  • all major organs are nearly formed
  • amniotic sac fills two third's of the uterus, where slight movements can be felt
  • heart beats 160/min.

Embryo

Illustrated above is what the embryo looks like after three weeks of fertilization. On mouse over, each picture represents the part that is being viewed. First we see what the head of the embryo will look like. In the next section we see the spine of the embryo. In the following section we see the umbelical cord and then the feet of the embryo.
